Anthony Samuel Galofaro

July 10, 1922 — November 16, 2018

Anthony Samuel Galofaro, who served in the Navy during World War II, died peacefully in his home in Charlestown, Indiana, on Friday, November 16, at 96 years old.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anita. They met while both were serving in the United States Navy during the war. He was a sailor, and she was a WAVE, the women in the Navy. They knew each other six weeks before they decided to get married when Tony was shipped out to the Pacific. They celebrated their 74th anniversary last month.

Tony was preceded in death by two of their three children, Sam, who died at 17 in a car accident in 1969, and Audree, who died at 40 of cancer in 1993. Tony and Anita survived it together, holding hands, and with the love of their devoted younger daughter, Julie Galofaro-Moore, and her husband, Tom. In their 70s, Tony and Anita adopted their two granddaughters, Claire Napier Galofaro and Jessie Burnett (Nathan), whose children, Laine and Vincent, were the apples of his eye.

Tony was born on July 10, 1922, to Salvatore and Maria Sciacca Galofaro, both Sicilian immigrants. He grew up on Virginia Avenue in Washington, D.C., where he was a boxer and played the violin.

Tony served as a fire control officer on the USS Great Sitkin and USS Fomalhaut and fought in the Battle of Saipan. After the war, he moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, his wife's hometown, and later to New Albany. He worked as an electrician and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 70 years. He went to Our Lady of Perpetual Help church and volunteered there and at Our Lady of Providence High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings, Annie Sakos (George), Tommy (Lilian), baby Mary, James, Mary "Sweetsie" Sechiel (Joe), Joseph (Fanny), Josephine "Peppy" Hall (Jim), and baby Rose.

In addition to his wife, daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren, he is mourned by many beloved nieces and nephews and dear friends, including Father Don Buchanan, Jim and Judy Fitzgerald, Micky and David Eade, Marilyn and Homer Ferree, and the group of old men who had lunch every Wednesday.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany).
