Anthony “Buster” Olinger, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on September 14, 1939, in Hazard, Kentucky, Buster’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.
A proud graduate of Lincoln Institute for High School and Kentucky State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree, Buster committed much of his early life to educating the young minds of Jefferson County Public Schools. His commitment to uplifting others continued through his later years until his retirement from Anthem BCBS.
Buster’s character was as broad as it was deep. Outgoing by nature and never one to meet a stranger, he carried an infectious warmth wherever he went. His pride in his work, his service, and his family defined him, but those who knew him best also treasured his talents as a handyman—a resourceful soul many relied upon, always ready to lend a helping hand.
His service to his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Army remains a profound chapter in his life, reflecting his patriotism and steadfast courage. Alongside this, Buster’s faith played a pivotal role; a former member of Town Mountain Baptist Church in Hazard, KY, he was a longtime and devoted member of Green Street Baptist Church in Louisville, where his spiritual community flourished.
Buster’s joys were simple yet deeply fulfilling. He delighted in University of Louisville basketball, found peace in fishing, and treasured every moment spent with his family. To his loving wife Naomi Olinger, with whom he shared 61 beautiful years of marriage, he was a steadfast partner and best friend. Their daughter Toni (Jermaine Ward) Olinger, son Ashley (Laurie) Olinger, and grandchildren Ava and Eli Olinger continue to carry the warmth of his legacy forward.
He is also survived by his brother Bill Olinger, a cherished companion through life’s journey, and Biff, his faithful furbaby who was a constant source of comfort and joy. The love of a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends stands as a testament to the many lives Buster touched.
Anthony “Buster” Olinger was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lizzie Olinger, and his eleven siblings, leaving behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
The community is invited to honor his memory through visitation at Green Street Baptist Church, 519 East Gray Street, Louisville, KY 40202, on Sunday, June 14th, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 PM.
As we grieve the loss of this extraordinary man, we also celebrate the lasting imprint of his kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to family and country. Anthony “Buster” Olinger’s spirit will forever resonate in the lives he enriched and the love he so freely gave.
