Alvin L. Schenck, 82, of Georgetown, Indiana, affectionately known as Papaw to his grandchildren, passed away on July 2, 2026. Al was born on November 21, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Al's formative years as a young man growing up in Palmyra, Indiana, instilled in him a firm work ethic -- a quality that would define him throughout his life. After graduating from Morgan High School, Al found his professional home at Colgate-Palmolive Company, where he dedicated himself wholeheartedly, forging lasting relationships with colleagues over the years. It was with pride that Al eventually retired from Colgate-Palmolive, closing the chapter on a long and successful career.
Outside of work, Al was a man who sought and found solace in nature. He cherished moments spent beneath the canopy of trees and beside gentle waterways, finding both peace and inspiration among the natural world. These moments offered him respite and joy, reflecting a spirit attuned to the rhythms and beauty of the outdoors. He was a skilled squirrel hunter who was featured in the Courier Journal's Today's Living in 1975. In later years, it was the enjoyment of just getting out in the woods to hunt mushrooms, and watch squirrels and other wildlife. An avid fisherman throughout his life, Al would fish many lakes in Indiana, including Patoka, all the way to lakes in Ontario, Canada. Al and his wife, Connie, spent many years on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, fishing its lakes and enjoying the great outdoors.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Schenck and Agnes Senn Schenck.; sisters Mary Agnes Payne and Martha Ann Neuner; and brothers Theodore, Wilbert, Louis, Norman, Stanley, Bernard, Carl and James Schenck.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 39 years, Connie Schenck; daughters, Lisa (Brent) Standiford, Melissa (Christopher) Wolfe, Laurie Harris, Holly (Mike) Harpe, and Whitney (Mindy) Honour; grandchildren, Blaire Standiford, Abigail Frazier, Danielle Harpe, Zachary Harpe, Jacob Harpe, and Christian Harris; and great-grandchildren, Cameron Hawkins, Aidan Standiford, and Sebastian Frazier.
As we remember Alvin L. Schenck, we honor the legacy of a man whose life was marked by his faith, devotion to his family, humility, and an abiding love for the world around him.
A Memorial Gathering will be from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Cremation was chosen following Al's wishes.
