Albert Walter Huggins, Jr., affectionately known as "Sonny," was born to Albert Walter Huggins, Sr. and Bobbie Lue Huggins on January 4, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky. He passed away on June 30, 2024 at Audubon Hospital in Louisville. He was the first born of nine children and set a great example for his siblings to emulate.
He was baptized at a very young age at Zion Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended regularly under the guiding eye of his grandmother (Alberta Huggins) and his great grandmother (Maggie Grundy).
Sonny attended the local public schools and a strong work ethic was instilled in him by his teachers. He was an ambitious young man and worked as a "paperboy" delivering the local newspapers, "The Courier Journal" and "The Louisville Times". He graduated from Central High School in 1953 and enrolled at the University of Louisville, where he completed 2-1/2 years. During this time, he was active in the Air Force ROTC at the university. He had a passion for aviation and his dream was to join the Air Force. He aced the admission exam for the Air Force but was denied entry due to an obstruction in his nose. He was not one to give up so easily and had surgery to remove the nasal growth. Before he could notify the Air Force that his doctors had cleared him for service, he was drafted into the United States Army on March 19, 1958. He served 2 years with the Water Supply and Purification Division of the United States Army. He was stationed in Hanau, Germany for one year.
Upon his return from duty, he enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He taught school at one of the local junior high schools and later began to work at the U.S. Post Office. He became the supervisor at the Dulles Airport branch of the U.S. Post Office. While working there, he met Eula Johnson. They married in 1965 and were married for 31 years. While holding down a job at the post office, he started his own business, The Huggins Cab Company, and worked two jobs for many years. Upon the urging of his wife, he gave up the cab company and subsequently retired from the US Post Office. He owned a fishing cabin in the Chesapeake Bay area and they both enjoyed getting on the boat and going fishing. Eula's health began to fail and he was her sole caretaker until her death on 10/6/96.
After the death of his beloved Eula, he returned to Louisville. He was able to enjoy many of his interests, but at the top of the list were aeronautics, astronomy, fishing and cooking. In contrast to his love of the sciences, he loved cartoons! He could be heard laughing at the top of his voice as he watched cartoons on a Saturday morning. His favorites were Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck and Daffy Duck. He could imitate their comical voices very well! He loved to attend airshows and "drowning worms" as he lovingly called fishing. His father was an excellent cook and fisherman and Sonny followed in his footsteps.
In 2005, he married Joyce Jenkins Bradley. They had been classmates at Central High School. They enjoyed their latter years together until she became ill. He took care of her until her death in February of 2019.
Albert Walter "Sonny" Huggins was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Bobbie Huggins, and his sisters, Bobbie Jean Abrams and Regina Yvonne Beasley. He leaves to mourn his passing the remaining siblings ..... Ronald, Jacqueline, Ellen, Delores, Patricia and Steven and a host of cousins and relatives.
The family has decided that the remains of Albert Walter “Sonny” Huggins, Jr. should be dispersed on Longview Beach of the Wicomico River which empties into the Chesapeake Bay. It is near Bushwood, Maryland. He spent many of his best times at his cabin, relaxing in this area of the country. May he find peace and rest in his haven.
