“One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.” Psalm 27:4
Addie Mae Patterson Cartwright was born on November 23, 1938 in West Point, Georgia to the late Oliver Patterson and Annie Patterson Johnson. After a long illness, she was ushered into eternity on Tuesday February 3, 2026. Addie was the youngest child of four siblings and was preceded in death by Hattie Dell, Henry Lee and Willie Frank.
Addie and her family moved to Louisville, Kentucky when she was a baby. At an early age she received Christ and united with First Virginia Avenue Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. R.J. Miller and later united with Greater Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. O.A. Hester. She was a faithful member of her church for many years, until her health failed. However, she remained steadfast in her love for Christ and her church family. Addie was an active member of the Missionary Ministry as well as other ministries as needed. But, her pride and joy was the Dare to Care Food Pantry, where she was honored as a Kentucky Colonel. Both of these ministries sought to assist the church family and community, while more importantly spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Addie was a PROUD graduate of Louisville Central High School where she was active in the Alumni Association. She was employed by the U.S. Census Bureau and later retired after 30 years as a U.S. Postal worker. She was quiet and loving and loved her friends. But most of all, she loved her family with a fierce and kind strength, that could always be felt. She enjoyed many hobbies, with her favorite being scrap-booking and crafting. Most notable was her passion for crocheting blankets and encouraging others to do so where they would later be donated to local nursing homes.
She was a devoted wife and mother and was united in Holy Matrimony with Earnest T. Cartwright on October 28, 1959. They always put the interests of their family first and saw to it that their children were given the best foundation they could provide; whether that was loving care, spiritual guidance or material things. They valued hard work, honesty and integrity and instilled those values in their children.
Addie was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Earnest T. Cartwright; sons, Earnest T. Cartwright (Bug), Jr. and Victor E. Cartwright, Sr.
During the most beautiful snow burst on the afternoon of Tuesday February 3rd, 2026, God called her to eternal rest. She leaves to cherish her memories, children, Sherri (Don) Cartwright Thurman, Vincent (Regina) Cartwright and Linda Cartwright Sills. Grandchildren, Kenton Cartwright, Victoria Cartwright, Allen (Jasmine) Cartwright, Joshua (Holli) Cartwright, Christian Cartwright, Seth Cartwright, Felicia Simpson, Alicia Simpson, Victor Cartwright, Jr., Noah Sills, Faith Sills and 13 Great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, Nieces, Anna (Charlotte) and Roxanne and Nephews, Keith McGill and Jimmy Cartwright. She is also survived by a host of cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Greater Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, (2636 Virginia Ave, Louisville, KY 40211) with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery (1600 Newburg Road Louisville, KY 40205).
