In Memory Of
Phyllis Ann Phelps
1944 - 2022
At the time of retirement, Phyllis was the longest working employee at Community Hospital East, Indianapolis, Indiana. The following email was sent out to the IT department on June 5, 2020, where Phyllis worked.
"Phyllis is a self-proclaimed country girl, who moved to Indianapolis in the mid 1960s to find work. After scoring 98% on her keypunching certification exam, she landed a job at Community Hospital East on June 10th, 1966. The relationship turned out to be a good one … as it turns out, this is the only place she has ever worked.
"She started as a Keypunch Operator and worked evenings on the giant IBM mainframe computer that was nearly as big as the room she worked in. As technology advanced, Phyllis was always involved and received training that would help further her skills. Programming became another skill that she enjoyed doing and liked working with COBOL. She has also held roles with the Help Desk, as a Receptionist, Desktop team, and, eventually, Security. In her most recent role, Phyllis worked PRN from home, helping coordinate the termination process for the different application teams as a member of the Identity and Access Security team.
"After 54 years of service to Community Health Network, Phyllis will retire on 6/10/2020. Please help me in congratulating Phyllis on her wonderful career here at Community and wishing her a very happy retirement!!"
Phyllis was born on August 2, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Thomas and Ida (White) Phelps. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her siblings, David Phelps and Shirley Ramsey.
She is survived by her brother, Carson Phelps; as well as numerous nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2022, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with her funeral service taking place at 12:00 p.m. Phyllis will be laid to rest privately beside her parents at Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Grace Tabernacle (8530 S. Harrison Park Road, Laconia, IN 47135).
