In Memory Of
Gary Owens
1955 - 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Owens announce his unexpected death on December 23, 2020 at the age of 65. His battle with serious health issues showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile.

Gary Lynn Owens, affectionately called “Murph” to honor his maternal grandfather, was a faithful man of God who exercised genuine love and care for his family. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Gary. He is survived by his loyal, loving, and devoted wife of 45 years, Mary Owens. He was a father to 7 beloved children: Renacka, Amanda, David, Wilneathia, Norman, Tony & Liliana and papa to 17 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.

Born October 6, 1955 to the late Mr. & Mrs. Johnny H. & Stella Murph Owens, Murph was baptized at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Lynch, Kentucky at an early age. He enjoyed an adventurous and lively childhood, becoming a musician and stellar athlete. During high school, he and his friends formed a music group called “The Mugs” where he sang and played guitar. He went on to play trumpet in the Lynch School Band. In addition to his musical talent, Murph was an exceptional athlete in basketball & football and was named All CVC player in football, during his senior year.

After graduating high school and moving to Louisville, he spent some time playing semi-professional basketball. Murph had a great love for everything Louisville Cardinals, Pittsburg Steelers and award-winning horseshoe pitching.

Along with his loving wife and children, he leaves to cherish his memory: Katherine (Aunt Kat) McCrewell, his siblings: Henry (Sandra) Mason, Delores Mason, Johnny (Donna) Owens, Jr, Sharon Kay Owens and Beverly Owens, Constance Owens; and Pamela Owens.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held on Monday, January 4, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, Ky. An interment will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Ave, Louisville, KY.
