Gary Leonard Solodkin
1941 - 2017

Dr. Gary Leonard Solodkin of New Albany passed away at Norton Hospital in Louisville on Sunday morning at 12:20 a.m., October 8, 2017. He was 76 years old.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, on February 16, 1941, he was the youngest of two children born to Joseph and Sylvia Solodkin. He was a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo with a Doctorate of Philosophy. He would go on to earn his PhD in chemistry and worked in that field for many years for Celanese, most recently with the Environmental Protection Agency in Louisville, Kentucky.

In his 30s his love for mixing chemicals transformed into a GREAT love for mixing ingredients, and he went back to school to become a Chef. His first job was as the head chef of The Fig Tree and later owned his own restaurants: Charley's and then On Broadway across from the Kentucky Center For The Arts.

In retirement, he continued on with his passion for hanging out with his granddaughters, tinkering with gadgets, gardening, motorcycling, bowling, traveling with his wife Beverly, and collecting eclectic art pieces, and most recently he developed a passion for helping children by mentoring middle school students locally.

Dr. Solodkin is survived by his wife Beverly Fitzner, daughter Stacy Solodkin, stepsons Brian Sullivan (Meg), Jeff Sullivan (Jessica), and Deron Sullivan, as well as granddaughters Kiley, Katie, Ella and Moira. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as an older sister, Edythe Solodkin.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, October 16, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Northside Christian Church. The address is 4407 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana 47150. A celebration of his life will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Ronald McDonald House charities (Gary's favorite charity), Hosparus of New Albany, or Amedisys of New Albany.
