Ruth W. (Sams) Powell, 99 of Louisville entered into eternal rest on May 25th, 2016. Originally from Corbin, KY, she was the eldest of 13 children born to Alfred Talmage Sams and Mary Maude (Engle) Sams. She was a former member of Valley Station Baptist Church and Evangel Christian Church. At 99, she was the longest living member of the Sam’s Families of South Eastern Kentucky. As a loving matriarch, her family was her greatest joy and she cherished every opportunity to have family gatherings.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years James R. Powell and grandson Shannon Story(Louisville), Sisters Ruby Sams Goodman(Herman) and Eula Sams Van (James) both of New Richmond, OH, Fanny Sams Dixon (Clarence), Beulah Sams Helton(Albert) and Brothers Hubert Sams, a WWll Veteran KIA, Raymond Sams (Margie), Layton Sams (Myrl) all of Corbin, KY.

She is survived by daughters Phyllis Story (John) of Louisville, Betty Silvers (William) of Naples, FL. Grandchildren, Karen Story, Debra Phelps, Tami Stirling and Great Grandchildren, Kasey Story, Joshua Phelps and Jessica Phelps all of Louisville. A sister Helen Sams Helm(Griswold) of Louisville and Brother Hershel Sams (Roberta) of LeHigh Acres, FL. Sister in laws, Mildred (Powell) Lockhart (Rev Robert) and Inez (King) Powell (Thermon) of Corbin, KY, Rev Elizabeth (Powell) Owens, Ft Wayne, IN and Evelyn (Powell) Eubanks of Virginia.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 10:00am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00pm at Newcomer Funeral Home Southwest Louisville Chapel (10304 Dixie Highway Louisville, Kentucky 40272).
