In Memory Of
Laura S. Woods
1937 - 2023

Laura S. Woods was a kind, compassionate and loving lady. She embraced new things and appreciated education and learning. Laura was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 20, 1937 to the late Julia McGee and Milliat Simpson. Laura entered into eternal rest on March 13, 2023. She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia McGee; her father, Milliat Simpson; her brother, James Thompson; and her sister, Frances T. Davis.

The family later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and she attended New Orleans Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She matriculated at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated Cum Laude, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. While at Dillard, Laura was initiated into the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She loved Dillard University and had many stories of fun times to share with family and friends.

Laura professed a hope in Christ at an early age. She attended the family church in New Orleans and when she moved back to Louisville, Kentucky, she joined Brown Memorial Christian Methodist Church where she was very active and involved in the ministries of the church. She loved working for the Lord. Later she joined Coke Memorial United Methodist Church at a Women’s Ministry gathering under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Kathy Ogletree Goodwin. She was a faithful member chairing the Communication Team, a member of the Children’s Council, Women’s Ministry, Administrative Council and Noon Bible Study and an Adult Sunday School teacher. She supported other teams and committees, always encouraging the work of the kingdom and working tirelessly until her health failed.

Laura met and married George Woods and to that union one child was born: Germaine Woods. Her daughter was the joy of their life and whenever she spoke of her, she beamed with a big smile. They were bonded together, protecting each other and supporting each other in every way. Germaine was the only child. To Germaine a son was born: Jermiah Woods Anderson. Jermiah was his grandmother’s most precious gift. She poured into him on every level and was an example to him, leading him to Christ and encouraging him to be all that he could be.

Visitation will be 12 to 2pm on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church, 428 E Breckinridge St, Louisville, KY 40203. A celebration of Laura's life will follow at 2pm.
