Nina VanGundy
1933 - 2022

Nina VanGundy, 88, passed into eternity on Friday, August 5, 2022 in Louisville, KY.

Nina (Lee) was preceded in death by her parents, Helen Scoggan Davis and Harry Van Alstine Davis, Jr. of Louisville.

Nina attended the old Kentucky Home School for Girls and graduated in the last all girl's graduating class from Atherton High School in 1951. She graduated from Christian College (now Columbia) in Columbia, MO. where she participated in the Equestrian program and was a member of Phi Delta Delta, a National Honorary Art Fraternity.

While living in Louisville, Nina was active in the Younger Woman's Club of Louisville and later the Woman's Club. She worked as Director of Public Relations for Acme Paper Stock Co. before the Fund Raising world and remained connected to Regal Crown Corporation for seventeen years. Nina formed Echo Diversified Sales and served on the board for the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education.

Nina's passion for horses stemmed back to her Mother's family and she pursued this interest for years. She enjoyed Bird Dog Field Trials, first for the opportunity to spend hours in the saddle and later owned and ran her own dogs. She also showed several horses in Plantation Pleasure Classes where Tennessee Walking Horses were involved.

After moving to Sarasota, FL in 1991, Nina worked for three different Chambers of Commerce and favored her position as Director of Membership for the Siesta Key Chamber. She also worked for Asolo Theatre and the National Cremation Society before retiring. She was active in Life Link promoting organ donation and the Republican Club. Other memberships included Tiger Bay and Who's Who, an international Singles organization. Nina chaired events to benefit the American Cancer Society and was the founder of a Single's event, an Evening in Paradise to benefit the Wellness Community of S.W. Florida.

In 2004 she married Theodore Sample and they shared time between Florida and Murphy, N.C. They loved the nature the mountains provided and worked together on many projects. They served on the Board for Appalachian Angels following completion of the Guardian ad Litem program.

After "Ted's" passing in 2013, Nina returned to Louisville and began the last leg of life's journey. Nina loved Duplicate Bridge and friendships that resulted from it. She was a member of the D.A.R., Woman's Club of U of L, and Sr. Care Experts. Early on she served as a volunteer Ombudsman for Catholic Charities. Nina was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and loyal to Trinity Broadcast Network.

She is survived by three children, John K. Volkerding, Jr. (Mary); Vincent Volkerding of Maryville, IL and Laura Volkerding of Murfreesboro, TN (Vivienne Irizarry). Two granddaughters, Kathryn Seger and Lauren Diebold (Garrett); great-granddaughter, Ava Seger and beloved cousin, William Semonin (Margie), of Bardstown, KY; and close friends, Judy Hill (Danny) and Bud Koenig.
