In Memory Of
Varughese Thomas
1941 - 2021

Born into a life of poverty, Varughese Thomas died a rich man, leaving behind his greatest fortune: his family. Varughese passed away on February 22, 2021, at the age of 79, after suffering a cardiac arrest due to underlying medical conditions.

As the oldest brother of his five siblings, Varughese took on tremendous responsibility at the early age of 16, dropping out of high school to provide for his family by working at the Bhilai Steel Plant. After twenty years of faithful service as Rail Mill Foreman, Varughese retired and took on the full-time work of being a devoted grandfather to his eldest grandson, Abey Philip.

Varughese always found the time to stop and smell the roses, especially the ones he planted, making it a priority for himself to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Varughese found no trouble making friends with his wit, infectious smile, and hearty laugh. Varughese loved nothing more than enjoying some good music with his friends and family over a cup of chai. Varughese was also an avid gardener, growing begonias, tulips, lilies, tomatoes, bell peppers, plantains, tapioca, green beans, eggplants, and so much more.

While Varughese’s garden received praise from the entire neighborhood, his pride was in his family. He is survived by his wife, Leelamma Vraghese; a daughter, Mini Philip (Nirmal Thomas); a son, Manoj Thomas (Sumathy Manoj); grandsons, Abey Philip and Reuben Manoj; a sister, Leela Sharma (Dr. VD Sharma); a brother, Dr. Thampy Thomas (late Sally Thomas); a sister, Susan Varghese (Varghese Samuel); a brother, Thomas Abraham (Susan Abraham); a sister, Annie Roy (Roy Varghese); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and
great-nieces.

He will forever be remembered for the sacrifices he made for his family to prosper.
