John Thomas McLarney, known as Jack to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in his home on February 18, 2021 at the age of 87. Jack grew up outside St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Kirkwood High School and Drury College. He completed a tour of duty in Germany while serving in the United States Army. In 1959 his job with American Synthetic brought him to Louisville, KY where he spent the rest of his life. He maintained a career in sales until he retired in 1997. He and his wife Paula have enjoyed volunteering their time together. They served as weekly tour guides at their church Southeast Christian for many years, in addition to serving at the Chapel at Churchill Downs and Jack also volunteered as an usher. They were active in their bridge group, numerous bible studies, and even worked as extras in the movie Secretariat, making the final cut cheering on the Triple Crown winner in the stands behind the main character!

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Meta McLarney, as well as his first wife Janie Whitten McLarney.

He is survived by his wife Paula Diggs McLarney of 28 years, his sons Tommy (Tracey) in Lexington, and Michael (Jenny) in Louisville and John Diggs in Dallas, as well as four grandchildren, Brannon & Keegan McLarney and Kate & Erin McLarney. Additionally he has a sister Carolyn Haase in FL.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Southeast Christian Church’s Chapel in the Woods. A gathering of family and friends will be from 11-12pm, and a celebration of his life will begin at noon.

Any donations may be sent to Southeast Christian Church in memory of Jack.
