William Harold Johnson, age 81, of Los Angeles, California, passed away on July 21, 2019, at home. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the City of Los Angeles.
Harold or ACE, as he was known in the basketball world, was a start at New Albany High School, a member of the all-Indiana team; and his rebound percentage was tops for the Indiana All Stars. He also won the coveted Optimist Award. ACE went on to excel at Rio Grande College in Ohio. He was fourth in the nation among small college players in field goal percentage. The Rio Grande athletic director stated “Johnson’s offensive record would have been more impressive had he shot more.” He cited Johnson’s hook shot as one of the best he has ever seen.
Harold was born on February 6, 1938 in New Albany, Indiana to the late Jonas and Cora Bell Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Oscar; sister, Virginia; and son, Edwin.
Harold is survived by his loving wife, Caldonia; children, Derrick, Eldridge, and Noreen; brothers, Don (Mildred, deceased) and Ralph (Kathy); grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Jones Memorial AME Zion Church, (258 Ealy Street, New Albany). His Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm on Monday, at the church with burial to follow at West Haven Cemetery.
