1923 - 2018

Norman Bates, 94, of Louisville, KY passed away on July 8, 2018. He was a Navy Veteran and retired as a machinist from Phillip Morris after 38 years. Norman was most proud of his bedroom suite that he built without the use of any hardware; completely dovetailed and hand finished. He loved spending time on the Ohio River at Wolf Creek and spent the winters on the Gulf side of Florida for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ruth Bates; son, Billy Bates; parents, Melvin and Thelma Bates and brothers, Melvin Bates and Charles Bates.

Norman is survived by his sons, Ricky (Scharlett) Bates and Rob (Katrina) Bates; grandchildren, Rod (Ashley) Bates, Kelly Bates, Emily (Darren) Dowell, Erin (Adam) Stelter, Amanda (Ben) Thompson, Alex (Yukyung) Bates, Cynthia (Joseph) Swartz, Kimberly Henderson, Garrett Bates and Lindsey Bates; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jack Bates, Bob Bates and Bill Bates, and step-son Ray (Sharon) Murphy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 12, 2018, from 3pm-8pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel, 10304 Dixie, Louisville, KY. A celebration of Norman's life will be Friday, July 13, 2018, beginning at 11am at the chapel of the funeral home with burial at Louisville Memorial Gardens West, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville KY.
