David graduated from Dubois High School in Fayette County, West Virginia and went on to attend West Virginia State University. In February 1943 David was inducted into the United States Army as a member of the 93rd Signal Company, 93rd Infantry Division. David served his country by the side of his servicemen in World War II and received many honors. He was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, WW II Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Meritorius Unit Award, and the Victory Medal.
After leaving the Army in February of 1946, David spent time raising a family. He has eight children from a previous marriage: Dwight D. Turner, Andre D. Turner (deceased), Maurice D. Turner (Philomena), Cornell D. Turner (Gail), Robin D. Turner, Chonita M. Turner, Kevin D. Turner, and Reginald D. Turner. He has two children from his current marriage, Shaunnette L. Harrison and Tawana D. Rivers. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
David worked for the New York City Transit Authority for 30 years. In 1986 he married Florence V. Rivers, his wife of 28 years. David retired in 1987 and he and Florence moved to Fayetteville, West Virginia.
After returning to West Virginia, David was very active in the community and served as Past Master, Justrite Masonic Lodge #27, Past Commander In Chief, King Solomon Evers Consistory #305, Past Second Lieutenant, 32nd Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Council of Deliberation of West Virginia, Past Potentate, Ramadan Temple #127 Shriners, Past Commander, of American Legion Post #149, Past Adjutant, American Legion Post #149. He also served on the Fayette County Zoning Board of Appeals as Chairman of the Board for two years.
David William Turner went home on Monday October 27, 2014 at 1:23 am in Louisville, Kentucky. He is now pain free and can rejoice with the lord. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon them.
