Margaret Ann (Hillebrand) Backherms, 86, of New Albany, Indiana passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 16, 2015. She was an employee of Our Lady of Providence High School from 1974 to 1991. After retirement, she began volunteer work for the Campus Ministry Department at Providence helping to prepare for hundreds of retreats, understanding the significance of the spiritual and life-changing retreat experience for each student. She was a long-time member of the VFW Post 1693 Hobart Beach, the American Legion Bonnie Sloan Post 28, and Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany.

She was born on September 3, 1929 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Joseph and Lillian (Gahlinger) Hillebrand. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Backherms, and siblings, Martha Backherms, Joseph Hillebrand, and Clara Hillebrand. Margaret is survived by her children, Bill Backherms, Karen McMaster (Dave); and brother-in-law, Phal “Felix” Backherms.

Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, IN). Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church (129 West Daisy Lane, New Albany) with burial to follow at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in New Albany.

Contributions in Margaret’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Providence High School (707 Providence Way, Clarksville, IN 47129) or to Holy Family Catholic Church.
