1942 - 2018
Catherine was a gifted student who graduated as valedictorian of Valley High School's senior class of 1960 and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Louisville with a BA in history in 1964. She was a teacher at Valley High School and Manual High School until 1972, when a school incident prompted her to re-examine her spiritual mission in life, leave teaching and enter the field of social work. She served in the areas of child and adult protection and as a domestic violence victim advocate until her retirement in 2000, after twenty eight years with the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children.
Catherine served her community through membership on the South Dixie Community Development Council and the Metro United Way Southwest Advisory Committee. She took courses in tax preparation and worked part time in that field for four years.
Catherine was a trivia enthusiast, an avid reader, and a scrap-booker, She took great pleasure in traveling with her beloved husband, Leonard, and going to art fairs, flea markets and outlet malls with her mother and sister.
Early in life, Catherine developed an enduring faith in God and translated that faith into compassion and commitment to helping others. She taught Sunday school and served on the single adult ministry team at Valley Station Baptist Church. Catherine was always there for her family and friends and never turned anyone away who sought her help, advice or counsel.
Catherine was preceded in death by her mother, Geneva Tyler; her step-father, Levi Tyler; sister, Linda Strepey; Cathy's first husband of ten years, Michael Willoughby and Cathy's beloved husband, of thirty years, Leonard Salings.
She is survived by her daughter, Holly (James) Almon; granddaughters, Katherine (David) Miller, Jayme Almon and Morganne Almon; great-grandson, Liam Miller; the step-daughter she helped raise, Tammy Scriber and her two sons Tyler and Justin Scriber. Also, step-children Richard (Marilyn) Salings, Kathy (Jimmy) Locke, Mark (Emma) Salings and Angela Salings and their families.
Visitation will be Monday, March 19, 2018, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel, 10304 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY from 10am-1pm with a celebration of Cathy's life beginning at 1pm.
Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery, 10917 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY.
